Plymouth Striders is a running club based at the Woolwell Centre in the north of Plymouth. We are a group of runners with a range of abilities from complete beginners to those who run Ultra Marathons, though most of us just run because we enjoy it.  The idea of the club in its origin was to allow a group of people to run together, gain experience and support from each other as well as increasing their fitness, stamina and the proud feeling of belonging to a group. This ethos has always been central to the club and along the way we have made friends whom we run with.

We meet on Mondays and Thursdays 6.30 at The Woolwell Centre, decide how far runners wants to run, splitting into smaller groups if necessary to cater for all, then we set off.  We acknowledge the abilities and moreover the safety of our runners and endeavour to ensure that runners do not run alone whilst their distance achievements can be realistic within the time available.  We all know that running is difficult at times, especially when beginning or starting again after a long break, but we have the knowledge within the club to bring runners on and with some self-determination they can achieve their goals.

Once a month, we face CHALLENGE 45, which allows you to challenge yourself on a 5 mile set route. The challenge is to see if you can beat your previous run time and to see how you have improved over the past month.  We often run at weekends and the sometimes during the mornings as well, but it’s not all about just running, we also have Striders Socials where we often have nights out at local pubs and also offer seasonal events too such as summer BBQs and Christmas celebrations.

After each run we are able to return to the Woolwell Centre for a hot or cold drink and a catch up with other club members. Currently we have around 30 members, the annual membership cost is £25 with and £1 per evening run attended.  Membership covers affiliation fees to England Athletics and Armada Network. Club kit is available, and if entering races or events using EA affiliation number the race cost are reduced (Club Vest is required).
